Fast X-ray Oscillations During Magnetar Flares

چکیده

The giant flares produced by highly magnetized neutron stars, "magnetars," are the brightest sources of high energy radiation outside our solar system. Serendipitous observations with NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) of the two most recent flares resulted in the discovery of high frequency oscillations in their X-ray fluxes. The frequencies of these oscillations range from = 20 Hz to as high as 1800 Hz, and may represent the first detection of global oscillation modes of neutron stars. Here I will present an observational and theoretical overview of these oscillations and discuss how they might allow us to probe neutron star interiors and dense matter physics.

High frequency oscillations during magnetar flares

The recent discovery of high frequency oscillations during giant flares from the Soft Gamma Repeaters SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14 may be the first direct detection of vibrations in a neutron star crust. If this interpretation is correct it offers a novel means of testing the neutron star equation of state, crustal breaking strain, and magnetic field configuration. We review the observational da...

Short-living supermassive magnetar model for the early X-ray flares following short GRBs

We suggest a short-living supermassive magnetar model to account for the X-ray flares following short γ−ray bursts. In this model, the central engine of the short γ−ray bursts is a supermassive millisecond magnetar, that is formed in double neutron stars coalescence. The X-ray flares are powered by the dipole radiation of the magnetar. When the magnetar has lost a significant part of its angula...

A Magnetic Flux Tube Oscillation Model for QPOs in SGR Giant Flares

Giant flares from soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) are one of the most violent phenomena in neutron stars. Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with frequencies ranging from 18 to 1840 Hz have been discovered in the tails of giant flares from two SGRs, and were ascribed to be seismic vibrations or torsional oscillations of magnetars. Here we propose an alternative explanation for the QPOs in terms...

QPOs during magnetar flares are not driven by mechanical normal modes of the crust

Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) have been observed during three powerful magnetar flares, from SGR0526-66, SGR1806-20 and SGR1900+14. These QPOs have been commonly interpreted as being driven by the mechanical modes of the magnetar’s solid crust which are excited during the flare. Here we show that this interpretation is in sharp contradiction with the conventional magnetar model. Firstly, w...

The superflares of soft γ-ray repeatres: giant quakes in solid quark stars?

Three times of supergiant flares from soft γ-ray repeatres are observed, with typical released energy of ∼ 10 erg. A conventional model (i.e., the magnetar model) for such events is catastrophic magnetism-powered instability through magnetohydrodynamic process, in which a significant part of short-hard γ-ray bursts could also be the results of magnetars. Based on various observational features ...
